How to Create a Ranking Pin on Pinterest

In researching how to promote businesses, I learned that Pinterest can be an amazing tool. However, the algorithm was a bit of a mystery to me. In my research to learn about how Pinterest works, I found a common formula in all the information. By following a few basic tips, you can watch a pin grow into a ranking pin! The Pinterest algorithm may feel like a secret formula, but by following these beginner tips you can create a ranking pin on Pinterest. This blog will explain all the basics of how to optimize Pinterest SEO (search engine optimization) within your pin, board, and profile using keywords.

What is Pinterest SEO?

Pinterest SEO, or Pinterest Search engine optimization, works by using relevant keywords to categorize content (such as pins) to show the target audience. It is the most important tool for creating ranking pins on Pinterest. By using Pinterest SEO within pins, boards, and profiles, it allows the algorithm to more efficiently know specifically who the content is for and what it is promoting, advertising, or showcasing.

What are Keywords?

Keywords are relevant words used to describe the content posted. There are two different types of keywords: short-tail keywords and long-tail keywords. Pinterest search is a great way to find relevant keywords that have high traffic to use for pins! This blog also has more useful and in-depth information on how to find the perfect keywords here.

Short Tail Keywords

Short tail keywords are general, nonspecific, one or two words a person may search – like ‘dinner’ or ‘fall photo’. Although the search volume is high for these words, the competition makes it difficult to rank. The short tail keywords are typically used in the pin titles.

Long Tail Keywords

The long tail keywords consist of three or more words that are very specific and descriptive. The competition for these keywords is a lot lower, making it easier to rank! These are perfect to include in descriptions. The more long tail keywords used, the more likely the pin will rank for multiple keywords, therefore, showing it to a bigger audience.

Using Pinterest SEO to Create a Ranking Pin on Pinterest

The main two focuses of pin SEO are the title and the description of the pin. The title of the pin should explain exactly what the pin is about with the relevant keywords being in the title. Ask yourself  ‘What is your audience looking for?’, ‘What is the link attached about?’, or ‘What do I want my audience to do?’ The word limit for the title is about 5 words.

Describing Your Pins

The description of the pin should expand on the relevant keywords in the title. One of the most important parts of having a ranking pin is having a rich keyword description with short and long-tail keywords.

Using Boards to Your Advantage

The Pinterest board is an important part of helping the Pinterest algorithm know what your pins are about. It also recognizes the similarity in the content, allowing it to generate more relevant content for an audience. By using short tail and long tail keywords as the board title makes boards searchable and offer another way for your audience to reach your content. Depending on the type of content you are posting will depend on whether a short-tail or long-tail board title will work better to achieve a ranking pin on Pinterest.

Optimize Your Profile

Your profile is the third place you want to optimize your Pinterest SEO. Include short-tail and long-tail keywords that describe the type of content or business your profile is posting. Your profile picture should also explain who or what your profile is about.

Pinterest SEO takes a lot of trial, error, and patience. Pins may not become ranking pins overnight, and usually do take time to gain traction. Although you may not see instant results, the great thing about Pinterest is the longevity of the content you post. Are you looking for more information and tips on social media marketing? Promote using User-Generated Content (UGC)

Stay with the trends but do it in an organic, authentic way! Here is where UGC comes in! What is UGC? User-generated content is published information that an unpaid contributor provides to a website. The information might be a photo, video, blog or discussion forum post, poll response or comment made through a social media website. Here is a great resource for understanding UGC. Apply this in a multitude of ways:

  1. Post about things you KNOW and promote brands you use everyday.
  2. Tell your audience why you love the products you love! Show longevity with the brand or product. Honesty is key here!
  3. SEO! SEO! SEO! Understand your niche and keywords that can build your business, brand or product you are promoting.

Paid Ads

Promoting yourself on social media is more important than ever! On the flip side, paid advertising can benefit your business in many ways. Let’s break down the different platforms and how paid advertising can drive brand and product awareness.

  1. Facebook and Instagram: Target your audience with specific demographics, interest and geography. These parameters will set you apart from other creators in your field.
  2. LinkedIn: Build business to business relationships with paid advertising. Build your social media presence by connecting with like-minded brands.
  3. TikTok: Choose your goal and promote on social media with the TikTok promote option. This allows you to reach your target audience in a multitude of ways. TikTok’s algorithm is different from other social media platforms. Accounts that don’t directly follow you can view your content just based on similarity, allowing your 30-90 second video to reach more followers driving more viewers to your page.

Best platform for social media marketing

You might be asking yourself, ”Where do I even start? What platforms are best for my target audience?” The best way to figure out what platforms are best for your small business is to determine what demographic you are targeting and where they spend most of their time. Here’s an overview of each platform:

  1. Instagram: Arguably the most popular social media platform, Instagram users can be found in all colors, shapes, ages, and sizes. With the most recent updates to Instagram’s algorithm, many pieces of content are lost, and focus has been put on accounts with a higher following and paid ads.
  2. Facebook: This platform is most popular with anyone ages 30 to 80, reaching most of your older demographic.
  3. TikTok: Want to reach a younger audience? TikTok is where you should be focusing your content. With over 50% of its users under the age of 30, this platform allows much more opportunity for organic outreach on a large scale.
  4. LinkedIn: Is your target audience mostly other businesses? This is the platform for you! This is the best place to post professional and relatable content.
  5. Pinterest: Do you own an ecommerce business with products you’re making or selling? Pinterest is a visual search engine that essentially makes all your posts into blog links. Talk about boosting your search engine optimization!
  6. Twitter: This is the best platform for short, quick information like news, quotes, and opinions. Many people even take their content from Twitter and reuse it on their other social media platforms as photo content.

User-generated content

“Quality over quantity” is an age-old saying, but does it apply to social media marketing? Well, yes and no. Within all successful brands, you see the high-production content along with the more user-generated content. What is user-generated content? UGC is defined as “any form of content—text, posts, images, videos, reviews, etc.—created by individual people (not brands) and published to an online or social network.”

Nowadays, people want to know your business stands up for social matters and the greater good of humanity. Real people are the face of your brand, and that should be reflected in all of your social media marketing efforts. People aren’t interested in your perfection, but rather your authenticity. In 2022, it’s time to educate, entertain, and inspire! Don’t hesitate to jump on trends that float around Tik Tok and Instagram Reels, and make your content relatable to your audience while still reflecting your brand.
